Character Dossier

Joab Ben Tzeruya, commander of David's army

He is David's nephew. His mother Tzeruya is the king's sister. From the day David takes the throne in Hebron to the day David lays down the crown, Joab stands at the head of his army. His brothers walk beside him: Avishai, his right hand in every storm, and Asahel, the youngest, light on his feet, who fell on a field he was meant to leave alive.

David himself is a warrior. The shepherd who stood against lion, bear, and giant. The king who led his army to Jerusalem, who stood at the head of the line in the Valley of Refaim, who carried the sword to Aram and to Edom. But when the king walks into a city, Joab is the first man through the wall. When David sings in the citadel, Joab is the iron at its gate. Two men. Two callings. One kingdom.

Before the citadel — darkness.

Jerusalem stood like a wall the world had given up on. From the days of Joshua its stronghold had never fallen — generation after generation passed beneath it, and the gate stayed shut. The Jebusites laughed from the rampart: even the blind and the lame would turn back the king of Israel.

David stood before his army and gave one challenge: whoever struck the Jebusite first would become chief. The men looked at the wall. The wall did not move. Then Joab found the water shaft. He went down alone. Cold water at his ankles. Iron at his belt. Stone above. Dark below. He climbed where no man would climb. The bolt of the gate slid open from the inside. David walked through.

The city that had never fallen had a name now. City of David.

Connections

  1. King David

    His uncle. The king.

His uncle who became king. In every battle. On every wall. When David could not say his name aloud — Joab still arrived.

  2. Avishai Ben Tzeruya

    His brother. His second.

Back to back against Ammon and Aram. Joab says: “Be strong, and let us be strong for our people.” When one stands, the other does not run.

    II Samuel 10:12

  3. Asahel

    His brother. The fallen.

The youngest brother. Light on his feet. The pool of Gibeon took him. He buried him in Bethlehem. The mourning was short. The vengeance was long.

  4. Avner Ben Ner

The commander on the other side.

A name tied to Asahel's last breath. Their story is not this page.

Strength

The Iron

He is first. In every battle. On every wall. In every field he is sent to. Where others step back, he steps in. His sword does not.

Wound

Asahel

The brother who did not return. He ran after Avner and would not listen. A reversed spear took him. Joab did not speak his name again. He carried it into every battle.

Joab’s hardness is not abstract. It has a name.

What comes next

David carried the crown. Joab carried the iron. The tunnel was only the first. Ammon waits. Aram waits. Rabbah waits.

The story of the sword does not end in the city. It only begins there.
