Character Dossier

David the shepherd boy resting on a rock in the hills of Bethlehem

He reads hills the way other men read scrolls. He knows the breath of a stalking lion before it crosses a ridge. He knows which stones in a stream will carry the sling, and which will turn in the air. Years before a king's army will freeze in a valley, this hand is already trained.

Samuel the Prophet comes to anoint a king. Seven sons stand in line. Samuel chooses none — and calls for the youngest, alone in the field. The hills heard his name first.

Before the crown — a field.

A lion comes down from the hills toward the flock. The whisper inside says he is only a boy. He breathes once. The whisper goes silent. He runs the cut he has already mapped, reaches the lion as the lamb is in its mouth, and strikes. He holds the jaw. He does not let go.

The lamb fell back, alive. No one saw it. The field remembered.

Four Threads

Connections

  1. Samuel the Prophet

The prophet. The first to see.

The old man who came in silence. He passed over seven sons and asked for the one still in the field. He anointed him before the house, or the nation, knew why.

    I Samuel 16:13

  2. Jesse, His Father

    His father. The silent watch.

He sent him last. Each evening he counts the flock: all here, even the small one. He sees the scar on the boy's arm. He says nothing. He lays a hand on his shoulder, and lets the silence be enough.

  3. Eliav, the Eldest

    His brother. Chosen against.

Tall. Handsome. The one the eye would pick. Samuel reached for him — and was told to look elsewhere. In the valley he will rebuke the boy who came with bread. The boy will not flinch.

  4. Ruth & Boaz

    The bloodline. Before him.

Great-grandmother. Great-grandfather. A different field, in a different time, where one act of kindness changed a family. The same blood stands now on the hill, sling in hand.

Five smooth stones. He took what he needed and left the rest.

Strength

The Sling

He has repaired it many times. New cords on the same wood. He did not take it from another, and he did not wait for one to be given. He built it for himself, and he learned it alone.

Wound

The Scar

The bear came hungry. It saw the flock, saw the boy, and understood who stood between them. It did not run for the sheep. It ran for David. A claw cut the arm. He did not give ground. The bear fell.

The hand that will not fail was trained where no one watched.

What comes next

Today he has one lamb. A day will come, and he will have a nation.

Everything he learned in the field — built him into a super-warrior and a leader.
