AVISHAI BEN TZERUYA

Shield of Israel's Lamp

The closest blade to the crown. When the king falls to one knee in the field, Avishai is already there.

“And Avishai son of Tzeruya came to his aid, and struck the Philistine, and killed him… that the lamp of Israel be not put out.”
— II Samuel 21:17

Character Dossier

He is David's nephew. His mother Tzeruya is the king's sister. From the night at Hachilah — when he went down alone with David into the heart of Saul's sleeping camp — to the wars of the kingdom, Avishai is the blade that never leaves the king's side. His brother Joab commands the army. Asahel, the youngest brother, once ran across a field and did not return. Avishai remains — and guards the man.

When the king falls.

On the Philistine field, David grew weary. Ishbi-benob — of the giant blood, girded with a new sword — raised his spear over the king. One moment, and the lamp of Israel goes dark. Then Avishai. He crosses the field, strikes the giant, and ends him. That day David's men swore an oath: the king would never again ride out to war alone.

The giant's spear fell. The lamp stayed lit.

Four Threads

Connections

  1. King David

His uncle. The king he guards.

His uncle who became king. Avishai goes down with him into Saul's camp and does not touch the anointed; he crosses a field so the lamp will not go out. His blade is always between David and the danger.

  2. Joab Ben Tzeruya

    His brother. The commander.

Back to back against Ammon and Aram. Joab leads the army; Avishai holds the edge. “Be strong, and let us be strong for our people.” When one stands, the other does not run.

    II Samuel 10:12

  3. Ishbi-benob

The giant who nearly took the lamp.

Of the giant blood, a new sword on his hip. He raised a spear over a weary king — and fell beneath Avishai's hand.

  4. The Three

    His circle of valor.

A spear he raised over three hundred slain. His name is spoken among the Three — and stands on its own.

    II Samuel 23:18

One spear. Three hundred. And a name that is not forgotten.

Strength

The Spear

Where others step back, Avishai steps in. Hachilah by night. Ishbi-benob in the field. Three hundred slain by a single spear. The first to step in, always.

Wound

Harder Than the King

His loyalty cuts too fast. At Hachilah he asked to strike Saul; before Shimei he asked for the man's head. Every blow against David is, to him, a crime that demands blood — and the king must hold him back.

The blade that guards the king is the blade the king restrains.

What comes next

Avishai's spear is not finished. Edom waits in the Valley of Salt. Aram waits. And the brother who ran and did not return casts a long shadow over the two who remain.

The story of the blade does not end in the field. It only sharpens there.
